Meet Our Coaches

Kris Bell

Head Coach | HYDRA Swimming

I was born and raised in Toronto and have been lucky to build a career that’s taken me across Canada, coaching at all levels—from Age Group to Head Coach to Varsity. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible athletes and staff, helping develop swimmers from their first strokes to international competitions. I’ve also been honored to serve on staff for several provincial and national teams, sharing in the excitement of high-performance swimming on the big stage.

Beyond the pool, I’m a husband of 20 years and a proud father of two. Our son is heading to university in the fall to study aviation and commerce, while our daughter is entering her final terms of high school. Family and coaching have been the two biggest constants in my life, and I’m grateful for both every day. In my spare time, I enjoy movies and am an avid cyclist with a love for all food, especially desserts.

At the heart of it all, I love what I do—helping athletes and coaches push their limits, build confidence, and achieve things they never thought possible.

Paul Bennion

Head Coach | HYDRA Football

I am from Cheshire, England, I am a motivated and progress driven coach who has developed the game of soccer across Qatar for the last 9 years. I have built the biggest girls soccer program in Qatar and I now strive to help grow a boys and girls soccer program here at Hydra. I pride myself on building strong relationships with players and parents so everyone wants to learn and enjoy attending our sessions. I have worked at Evolution Sports as a football coach and BE Sports as the soccer director, where I developed my knowledge in both areas. I have also worked in America at DME Academy in Daytona, Florida, supporting players from all over the world.

Andrew Dodd

Head Coach | HYDRA Basketball

Coach Andrew Dodd brings over three decades of experience coaching at the varsity, club, and national team levels.   He is currently teaching at the American School of Doha (ASD) where he built one of the premier varsity basketball programs in the region over his seven-year period as head coach. His passion for youth development also led him to found the popular Dragon Hoops and Dragon Hoops Elite camps at ASD, serving athletes aged 8–12.

Beyond the school setting, Coach Dodd played a key role in developing Abu Issa Sports, helping bring NBA coach JJ Outlaw to Doha for a series of youth camps and coaching clinics. Most recently, he served as a private shooting instructor with the organization. In 2023, Coach Dodd published The Trig Approach, a book focused on innovative offensive play design.

Committed to building high-character athletes and strong team culture, Coach Dodd now brings his proven approach and deep basketball knowledge to the Hydra program, aiming to inspire the next generation of players through a tradition of excellence and positivity.

Facilities

HYDRA Sports will use the facilities at the American School of Doha. ASD is centrally located in Doha and provides an easy locale to travel to for our primarily evening programming.

Aquatics has access to two 6-lane 25 meter pools. The outdoor pool is ideal for teaching and is used for our FUNdamentals program in the Fall and Spring terms. The indoor pool is the base for our competitive programs in the Fall and Spring. The groups switch pools in the Winter to make sure our youngest swimmers are in a warm environment during the cooler weather.

Football has access to two full size grass pitches plus gym space for futsal games. These well-maintained fields can be used to run multiple levels at the same time with appropriate goals for small-sided games and progressing to full matches.

Basketball will be based in the four gyms at ASD. Two of these gyms have adjustable height hoops to provide appropriate challenges for all ages. There are six baskets in each gym to provide many opportunities for repetitions to groove the skills as directed by our coaches.

All athletes will have access to the weight room and training facilities at ASD once it is appropriate in their development.
