OUR MISSION...

Hydra Basketball Academy is dedicated to cultivating a dynamic, inclusive, and empowering basketball environment for athletes of all ages, genders, and ability levels. Rooted in the vibrant community of the American School of Doha and extending to the greater Doha region, our mission is to foster a culture of continuous learning, teamwork, and positive mindset development—on and off the court.

Through elite-level coaching, innovative program design, state-of-the-art facilities, and high-quality equipment, Hydra delivers a player-focused experience that adapts to individual needs. Our flexible membership model and differentiated instruction ensure that every athlete receives personalized support to achieve their full potential—whether they are taking their first dribble or competing at an advanced level.

Hydra is more than just a training academy; it is a community committed to excellence, character, and growth through the game of basketball.

COACHING STAFF

At Hydra Sports, we believe that a high-quality coaching staff is the cornerstone of any successful player development program. That’s why we’re excited to announce a new collaborative initiative with Abu Issa Sports. As part of this joint effort, top international coaches Francis Mercado and Georgios Dimos will be working with the Hydra Basketball program, bringing their elite expertise and global experience to our athletes.

Why Basketball?

So why is basketball great for young kids, and what are the benefits of getting them into a structured program as early as five years old?

Membership: The Hydra Five

Our program design centers on five training foundations which are all part of the membership package. These essentials focus on not just developing good players but building great teammates. The beauty of team sports is playing for each other, not just with each other…the integration of skill development to successful team performance.

Team Training Sessions

(Prep, Practice + Play)

Every great practice starts before the first whistle. At Hydra Basketball, pre-practice prep includes video analysis, skill isolation, tactical review, dynamic warmups, and technique activation—so every rep has purpose, and every player hits the court ready to compete. (15-30 mins).

At Hydra Basketball, full team practices are more than just time on the court—they’re where athletes grow into competitors, teammates, and leaders.   Our players will have access to online team pages which will provide advance practice plans, videos to watch & messages from their coaches.

Each session is carefully designed to combine individual skill development, game situational learning, team systems, and high-level conditioning—all while reinforcing the values that define great athletes: selflessness, accountability, hard work, and unity. (60 mins).

Team practices always conclude with a live scrimmage. Consistent game context is critical to player development & also add the most critical element to all young players…fun! Learned skills need to be tested under game conditions- pressure, pace, reads & real-time decisions.

Train & compete! (30 mins).

Play also constitutes scheduled contests against other teams in Doha.  Weekly practice sessions are either 2 or 3 times a week, based on whether a game is scheduled on the weekend.

Hydra’s circuit training gives players the opportunity to complete structured, independent skill work twice a week, using our state-of-the-art equipment and guided by coach supervision.

These optional sessions are included in the membership and are designed to reinforce what’s taught in practice while developing essential habits like self-discipline, accountability, and purposeful repetition. Progress is tracked through individual player profiles—making each session a step toward long-term growth. (60 mins)

As part of the Hydra Basketball membership package, each term includes three 90-minute open gym sessions—a critical piece of player development that goes beyond structured practice. These sessions are unstructured but supervised, allowing players to compete, experiment, and apply their skills in live, unscripted settings. It’s in these moments that players learn to read the game, make real-time decisions, and develop the creativity, confidence, and instincts that structured practices alone can’t build.

Just as importantly, open gym helps players fall in love with the game—playing for the joy of it, building friendships, and discovering the fun in the grind.

At Hydra Basketball, we believe open gym isn’t extra. It’s essential. (90 minutes)
